Seeing is Believing...
For the past year I have been coaching clients using visual maps and graphic recording. We're either using paper and pencil when we meet face to face or using a graphic tablet and Zoom technology when we meet from a distance. Sometimes the map is part of a larger process like SHIFT-IT. Other times I am creating the map as the conversation takes shape. And still other times the conversation points to using a design that has proven successful when it comes to things like action planning, or weighing options, or looking at an issue from multiple angles. Whatever the map, whatever the issue, a map takes coaching to a whole new level, helping others to see patterns of thought, connections between ideas, and more powerfully, possibilities that were hidden from consciousness. Multiple maps are like chapters in a book -- each advancing the story that is emerging, and serving as ballast to visions that are coming into form, and anchoring thought into action.
This month I've started to develop and use "career mapping" as part of the career coaching and development work I do. In the work we take time to take stock of what's happening in this moment, but also take a look in the "rear window" before moving forward with a career vision and action plan. Charting a career journey filled with twists, turns, life experiences and defining moments is illuminating as people remember and recapture what is core and unique to them, and pull it forward into the careers and opportunities they are designing for themselves.
Visual coaching draws us into a world of possibility and draws out the power, splendor and talent that resides in each one of us.
